Aptly named the “Water of Life”, the exact origin of Scotch Whisky is as mysterious as the Highlands from which it was born. Historians have estimated that Scotch Whisky dates at least as far back as the monks of 15th century Scotland, or perhaps even earlier.

What is Scotch Whisky?
Scotch Whisky is a distilled spirit typically made from 10 to 20% malted barley and other unmalted cereals such as wheat and maize. Scotch Whisky refers only to whiskies that have kept their geographical significance, meaning they were wholly distilled and matured in Scotland for a minimum of three years.
What Are The Different Types of Scotch Whisky?
Scotch Whisky is usually split into two different categories: the commonly known malt whisky and grain whisky. While Grain Whisky can be produced anywhere in Scotland, Malt whisky can then be split even more into the following sub-categories, depending on where whisky is manufactured:
- Lowland Malt Whisky
- Highland Malt Whisky
- Speyside Malt Whisky
- Islay Malt Whisky
- Campbeltown Malt Whisky
